In the Meadows, I focused on macro photography, capturing detailed images of some leaves and fungi. The camera impressed me with the fine details it was able to capture. Moving on to the Town Hall, I concentrated on interesting subjects like a bench leading to the old Police Station and a classic red phone booth. I was warmly greeted by Lizeta, who showed me around the enchanting grotto. It was a sight to behold—a literal Christmas wonderland. After setting up, I took a moment to acclimate myself to the grotto, quickly figuring out my settings and the optimal lens to use, ultimately settling on the Sigma 17-70mm. Using a flash gun for the first time was a learning experience on the job. In hindsight, I realized that I could have managed without it by simply increasing the ISO. Ideally, bringing more studio equipment to balance the lighting would have been beneficial. The staff fully embraced their roles, transforming the experience into a delightful Christmas pantomime. Santa’s and his Elves brought the grotto to life with their infectious enthusiasm and festive spirit. Photographing this event was a unique experience. The children’s faces lit up with joy and wonder as they interacted with Santa and his Elves. Capturing these candid moments required patience and attentiveness. I aimed to preserve the genuine expressions and emotions. Challenges and Solutions The primary challenge was mastering the use of the flash gun. Adjusting the settings to achieve the perfect lighting was a trial-and-error process. Additionally, the indoor lighting conditions varied throughout the grotto, requiring constant adjustments to the camera settings. This enabled me to get warmed up and into “photography” mode so-to-speak. There was quite a few things to photograph actually from the secret book swap, where the members brought gift wrapped books to swap, to stalls of locals crafts and decorations all around. Bethany, the co-organiser had put in a lot of effort to celebrate their first birthday. It was all too soon that the first guests started to arrive and sit down and it was a busy turn out with many groups of people. This is mostly because I find it difficult to find “posed” images interesting. They either look too fake and unnatural or too cliché. So putting on my 70-300mm to keep my distance I started to take some images. I found there two 6 main groups of people scattered around the room which main it easier to keep my distance. I opted to get a wider variety of images covering most or all of the groups there along with images of the stalls I even including some images of the books people were reading. I don’t really photograph events like this, being more of a landscape photographer but when I do I really enjoy capturing the “moment”. I prefer the subjects to be natural and not notice the camera in front of them. This way I find I get more “interesting” and unstaged / awkward shots of people. Emma, here was colouring in some image that the organisers had placed on tables, there was a competition at the end of the afternoon for the best image.
